The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)’s candidate Anil Vij is contesting the Haryana assembly elections from the Ambala Cantt constituency. Vij, who also served as the state’s home minister, lost the seat as a BJP candidate in 1991. He fought again in 1996 and 2000 as an Independent candidate, winning both elections.
Later, in 2005, Anil Vij lost the seat to Congress and returned to the BJP to fight the elections after that. He won the Ambala Cantt seat in 2009, 2014 and in 2019 on the BJP ticket.
ANIL VIJ’s FIGHT IN AMBALA CANTT
Vij is up against independent candidate Chitra Sarwara, who has been a runner-up from the seat in 2019.
She is reported to have given a tough fight to Vij and also held a meeting with her supporters in Ambala Cantonment to discuss the election.
During the last state polls, Anil Vij secured 64,571 votes, while Chitra, also running as an independent, garnered 44,406 votes, losing by a margin of 20,165 votes.
Ambala Cantt is one of the 90 Assembly (Vidhan Sabha) constituencies in Haryana. The constituency is located in the North Haryana region and can be classified as Urban and falls in the Ambala district of Haryana. The reservation status of this constituency is ‘general’.
ANIL VIJ CONFIDENT OF WIN
Following the Haryana assembly election, Vij remained confident about his victory in Ambala Cantonment, questioning the credibility of pro-Congress exit polls.
The election for the Haryana legislative assembly was held on October 5, when the district of Ambala recorded a voter turnout of 67.62 per cent with substantial participation across its constituencies.
