Delhi Elections: CAG Reports Will Mark Kejriwal’s Doom, Says BJP’s Vijender Gupta – News18

The unreleased reports from the Comptroller and Auditor General of India (CAG) will be ‘kaal’ for Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) supremo Arvind Kejriwal, just like it shook the Congress-led UPA-II and brought down the two-term government of late Dr Manmohan Singh, said Vijender Gupta, Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) leader of opposition in the Delhi assembly.

Speaking to News18, the two-time Rohini MLA also said that the AAP is suppressing the CAG reports as they are aware that it contains blunders, corruption, leakages and misuse of public funds.

“The leaked report has hints of all these things. In the past five years, not a single CAG report has been tabled in the assembly. These reports contain reality on pollution, health and education. These reports are the audit of public money that shows blunders. They are holding up these reports as they know otherwise their reality would be made public through these reports. This is complete lawlessness,” Gupta said ahead of filing his nominations on Wednesday.

He went on to say that the reports from CAG authenticate the corruption of Kejriwal and his party under their rule.

“The CAG reports brought down the government of the late Manmohan Singh. All those scams, including 2G, came out in public due to the reports from CAG. These reports (on Delhi) will be the ‘kaal’ of Kejriwal too,” he said in Hindi.

THE CAG REPORTS

The CAG is the supreme audit institution of India. The body is empowered to audit all receipts and expenditure of the Union and State Governments and various bodies under them. The audit reports from CAG come into the public domain after they are tabled in the Parliament or the concerned state legislature.

However, the CAG reports on the Delhi government were leaked before it was tabled. The leaked reports show some irregularities.

The BJP MLAs, including Gupta, have been demanding the tabling of these reports for a long time now and eventually moved court for the same. On Monday, the Delhi High Court questioned the Delhi government over the delay in the tabling of these reports saying it “raises doubts about your bona fides”. The next hearing in this case is on January 16.

Gupta went on to say that they did everything in their hands to table these reports in the assembly but the AAP blocked them everywhere. “We were marshalled out of the assembly for demanding the tabling of these reports. They don’t want to bring these reports to the assembly because they are hiding the truth. Now our only hope is court. We are hopeful that the court will give directions to table these reports,” he said.

The outgoing LoP explained that a session should be called before the elections are held. “The house is still live and can be called even now. The house should be called and these reports should be tabled and made public. This has nothing to do with elections,” he said.

Another case was filed in the Delhi High Court saying that at least 14 CAG reports are pending and should be tabled before elections are held on February 5. On Tuesday, the Delhi High Court asked the CAG to explain why the reports could not be made public. The next hearing will be held on January 24.

WHAT SANJAY SINGH HAD SAID

Earlier this month, when parts of the CAG reports were leaked, AAP Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Singh said the BJP was using forged documents to push its narrative.

“The CAG report comes in a sealed cover and has not yet been tabled. Meanwhile, the BJP is using forged documents to push its narrative,” he had said, raising counter questions for the BJP governments in several states not publishing these reports.

POLL PROSPECTS

Gupta, who filed his nomination from the Rohini assembly seat aiming for a third term, went on to say that they will form the government with a complete majority.

“People had enough of them (AAP). They are exposed now. The narrative they gave on honesty had been broken. This was their USP (unique selling proposition) but now people are not trusting them. We are forming the government with a complete majority,” he added.

Gupta went on to say that in the past 10 years, the AAP destroyed the city. He alleged that under the guise of development projects, the AAP government committed corruption worth crores, impacting the lives of Delhi’s two crore citizens.

He urged people to uproot the corrupt AAP government and ensure the formation of a “double-engine government” of the BJP in Delhi. He appealed to the public to contribute to taking the nation’s capital to new heights of progress by voting for the BJP.

Gupta managed to get elected to the Delhi Assembly even when the AAP swept the elections in 2015, winning 67 of the 70 seats. Only two BJP MLAs in Delhi managed to stand against the strong possible Kejriwal wave in 2015 and 2020. Apart from Gupta, who was elected from Rohini in 2015 and 2020, it was Om Prakash Sharma, the MLA from Vishwas Nagar, who got elected in the past two assembly polls.

Delhi goes to polls on February 5 while the counting of votes will be held on February 8.
