Till 5 pm, the voter turnout in Mumbai City during Wednesday’s Maharashtra assembly elections was 49.7 per cent and Mumbai suburbs 51.76 per cent. Urban voter apathy has been a challenge for the Election Commission, which has repeatedly run campaigns to encourage people to come out and vote.
Mumbai is divided into 36 assembly constituencies: ten in the island city and twenty-six in the suburban district. A total of 410 candidates are contesting this time; among them are 105 from the island city and 315 from the suburbs.
Authorities established a total of 10,117 voting booths across Mumbai. Of these booths, there are 2,538 located within the island city and another 7,579 spread throughout the suburban district.
Mumbai’s unimpressive turnouts
Mumbai recorded a turnout of 52.27 per cent in this year’s general elections, lower than that in 2019. The polling percentage across the six Lok Sabha constituencies in the city was 55.38 per cent five years ago.
In the 2019 assembly elections, 50.67 per cent of the city’s voters turned up at polling booths. The turnout was 51.21 per cent in the 2014 assembly polls.
Before 2014, Mumbai would struggle to touch 50 per cent turnout in assembly polls. The figure in the 2009 state polls for the city was 46.1 per cent. It was 48.4 per cent in the 2004 assembly polls and 44.9 per cent in 1999.
Eligible voter count crosses 1 crore
The voter count in Mumbai has surpassed one crore, increasing from 98.95 lakh during the Lok Sabha elections earlier this year, PTI reported. During the general elections, the city had 98,95,602 eligible voters, with 25,16,667 in the island city and 74,64,974 in the suburban district.
Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation chief Bhushan Gagrani announced that Mumbai now has 1,02,29,708 voters for the 2024 assembly elections: 25,43,610 in the island city and 76,86,098 in the suburban district.
Among the voters are 54,67,361 men, 47,61,265 women, and 1,082 transgender persons. There are 1,46,859 voters aged over 85 years and 23,928 persons with disabilities. Overseas voters number 2,288 while service voters total 1,475.
After the Lok Sabha elections of 2024 concluded, an additional 2.91 lakh voters were registered, including 53,372 new voters in the island city and another 2,37,715 in the suburban district. However, the names of 43,020 voters were removed post-elections, the report added.
